Sourcing Humanely Raised Hides - We had to do it ourselves! When we began to produce our leather bags we searched far and wide for beautifully tanned, humanely raised domestic hides, only to find that they did not exist in any reliable quality or quantity. How could this be, given that so many ranches are producing cattle and bison using humane methods and environmental best practices? What we learned is that once they get to a processor, all hides go into the same pot so to speak, before they are sent off to a tanner. After sampling leather from the few remaining domestic tanners (most tanning has gone off shore) we decided to use Horween Leathers exclusively in all of our leather products, believing, as many do, that Horween produces some of the the finest leathers in the world. Founded in 1905, Horween is a fifth generation family owned and operated tannery located in Chicago. For proof of concept of Humanely Raised Hides we selected a beautifully run, best practice ranch - The Flying B Bar - producers of amazing grass fed beef, located here in Colorado. We toured the ranch and met the owners and the extremely well cared for animals. We chose the Flying B Bar for their total commitment to the health and well being of their animals all the way through to their choice of an Animal Welfare Certified Processor. Working with Horween, we arranged for a small batch test of Flying B Bar Humanely Raised Hides to be shipped to Horween and tanned. As expected the results are amazing.
